To post or not to post, that is the question. As a marketing agency, we are often asked how frequently businesses should be posting on social media. The truth is, this magic number varies between platforms and it is constantly changing due to social media algorithms and policies. Yet, frequency can mean the difference between gaining followers and losing them. The good news is that we can help you find the sweet spot, so you know how often your business should be posting on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn.
How often should I post on Facebook?
When it comes to Facebook, we recommend posting a minimum of 3 times per week to ensure you are staying active online. This is just enough to tell your customers, “Hey, we’re still here!” while keeping them interested and engaged with your content. If you’re just starting out, it’s best to start small at a frequency you can easily maintain, and gradually ramp it up to once per day as you gain confidence and your page gains traction.
On the flip side, it’s also possible to post too much. If you are posting more than 3 times a day, you run the risk of coming across as ‘spammy’. As a consequence, Facebook might show your content less frequently and you may lose followers, which goes against what you are trying to achieve.
How often should I post on Instagram?
Due to the visual layout of Instagram and its fast-paced nature, it is easier for highly visual brands (i.e. fashion, food or recreation) to post more frequently. Keep in mind that Instagram follows many of the same rules as Facebook, because this social media channel is owned by them.
As you get used to the platform and its uniqueness, start by posting 3-4 days a week on Instagram. Once you start gaining momentum, you will find that posting twice a day is the sweet spot. Don’t be afraid to ramp it up to 4-6 times a day, but keep an eye on your follower count to make sure that you aren’t losing followers to post frequency.
How often should I post on Twitter?
When it comes to Tweeting the perfect number of Tweets per week, it’s a whole other ball game. Twitter moves at a lightning speed and posts will always show in chronological order. Therefore, it’s likely that your audience will miss out on a lot of your Tweets, unless they go directly to your Twitter page. This means that the risk of spamming your followers is much lower than Facebook and Instagram.
As a rule of thumb, when starting out, we recommend posting 1-3 times per day on Twitter. Ideally, you could post 15-20 times per day. However, each Tweet needs to contain quality content, so only commit to what you can realistically maintain.
How often should I post on LinkedIn?
If you are managing a LinkedIn business account, aim to post 3 times a week during business days (Monday–Friday), with a maximum of 20 posts a month. If you post more than twice a day, it’s likely that your post engagement will drop significantly. Using a professional social networking site like LinkedIn is a great way to generate leads and is often overlooked.
